I can still hear my mom’s voice.
Picture a young boy sitting at the kitchen table, legs swinging beneath the chair because they don’t quite reach the floor yet. Homework spread out. A backpack tossed in the corner. The sounds of everyday life filling the hous and then my mom would say it.
“You’re a leader, not a follower. Always do the right thing.”
At the time, it seemed like just another thing moms say.
But she didn’t say it once.
She said it over and over and over again.
Before school.
Before basketball games.
When friends were making bad choices.
When life got difficult.
When nobody else was watching.
“You’re a leader, not a follower. Always do the right thing.”
Those words became the soundtrack of our childhood. We heard them so often that they started to sink deeper than our ears. They found their way into our hearts. Into our decisions. Into the way we saw ourselves.
My mom wasn’t raising children who followed every trend or did whatever everyone else was doing.
She was doing her best to raise kids with enough courage to stand on their own. Kids who would choose character over popularity. Kids who would do the right thing even when it was the hard thing.
Years passed and the little boy at the kitchen table grew up. One day, I found myself standing in front of my own children.
And without even thinking about it, the same words came out of my mouth.
“You’re a leader, not a follower. Always do the right thing.”
In that moment, I realized something. What my mom gave me wasn’t just advice. It was an identity. She taught us to see ourselves as leaders long before the world ever gave us a title.
And because she planted that seed in us, we’re planting that same seed in our children. That’s what this shirt represents.
Not just a quote.
Not just a design.
A legacy.
A reminder that the words spoken into a child today can shape the adult they become tomorrow.
Every time a child wears this shirt, we hope they remember that leadership isn’t about being in charge.
It’s about having the courage to choose what’s right. Even when it’s unpopular. Even when nobody’s looking. Even when everyone else is going the other way.
Because somewhere, years from now, we hope they’ll hear a familiar voice in their heart saying:
“You’re a leader, not a follower. Always do the right thing.”
And just like Peggy’s words did for us, those words will continue their journey into the next generation.
